networked research, fluent communications – helmholtz pioneer campus
signage system
munich 2024
at the helmholtz pioneer campus experts from different fields engage in joint research. this interdisciplinary concept which brings together different perspectives is reflected in the architecture with an access space that connects all floors.
the signage system too forges exceptional connections: it’s made up of nine signage struts, up to 18 metres long, angled across the floor-to-ceiling atrium that links the research labs and braced between floor, walls and ceilings like rubber bands.
when things get too beautiful, something‘s missing: a disruptive element; a wide-eyed wow moment. while we were working on the signage system for the helmholtz pioneer campus, the architects asked if we could suggest a solution for the fair-faced concrete wall directly opposite the main entrance. here was the ideal opportunity. the mural by shiwen sven wang is, quite literally, an extension of the building itself, showing us what goes on behind the walls and at the same time conveying a personal message: here we are. welcome, honoured guest
