dancing with waves – otto-rettenmaier-audimax, außenkennzeichnung, stuttgart 2016

a dancing garland of light, a shimmering aureole. the monolithic building is inscribed with the benefactor’s name – a simple intervention, executed with caprice: in the typographer’s view this hermetic construction calls for a delicate finishing touch, which accentuates the intended architectural effect. seeking to avoid the imposing grandeur of a classical pediment inscription, the writing is arranged around all three sides of the fascia, with only a fragment visible on each side. the letters project away from the building, floating in front of the façade and creating a shadow ballet, a delightful disturbance, like freckles on the undulating surface of the architectural skin.
