goodbye art book, hello book art – pascal sorg, artist monograph

the art world has its own rules, including when it comes to designing exhibition catalogues and artist monographs. these only interest us when we’re free to work in a conceptual, challenging way, as with this book for the artist pascal sorg. the concept is simple, though very complex in terms of how it‘s made: the book shows all the pictures in the same scale, each one on a folding sheet so that the binding doesn‘t run through the image. the double pages are the same size as the images which means that tall pages are followed by short ones, narrow ones by wide ones. on the reverse side all the sheets are printed grey all over, providing a frame for the images. the different page formats – no two are the same – are inserted by hand, centred on the vertical axis, and sewn with grey binding thread. the endpapers and the bookcloth are grey, too. this big grey book encourages contemplative browsing and allows the colour and energy of the art to take centre stage.
