traditions remastered – redchild, griot
visual identity
hamburg, 2025

in west africa, a “griot” is a traditional singer and storyteller who passes on stories and customs from one generation to the next through their performances and songs. griot is also the new album from the musician redchild, premiered in hamburg’s elbphilharmonie with a 15-strong ensemble and guest artists. this hip-hop artist and emcee (master of ceremonies) entrusted us with the album cover, and our emtee (master of typographies) used a traditional craft to give visual expression to the compelling originality of these instrumentalists and storytellers. because with linocuts it’s like performing a musical work or retelling a story: each time is unique, no two printings – or performances – are exactly the same. you can always detect a personal touch; you can always feel the creative drive at work. and just as the details of a song will vary a little with every new performance, so the five letters of the title are all arranged different ways round, celebrating diversity and individuality.
